Dog Behaviour Consultation
Are you struggling with your dog?
“All dogs can speak, but only to those that listen” Orhan Pamuk
Is your dog struggling with behaviours that leave you feeling concerned, confused or even overwhelmed? Frustratingly, the world can become very small and limiting for a dog with behavioural issues and the same often happens to the dog’s guardian. What should be a joyful, easy and companionable experience can quickly become traumatic—marked by unexpected challenges, behavioral issues and emotional strain.
Just like people, some dogs cope better than others. Some may shut down completely and appear “fine” even when they are not. Science shows that emotional trauma can cause (and can be felt like) physical pain because it affects the same neural pathways in the brain. It can trigger a “fight-or-flight” response, leading to symptoms like muscle tension, headaches and digestive issues. In some cases, unresolved emotional issues can manifest as chronic pain—and vice versa, where chronic pain can worsen emotional distress. PTSD-like conditions in dogs are not new to professionals in the canine behaviour field. The underlying mechanisms of fear and anxiety in response to trauma are shared across species. Think of a time when you received tragic news or witnessed a dramatic event—many of us instinctively clutch our chest, as if experiencing real, physical pain.
Approximately 70% of dogs with behavioural issues have underlying medical conditions, most often related to pain. Numerous studies have shown that chronic pain and mental health are closely connected. Chronic pain may stem not only from physical injury but also from stress and emotional trauma.
My aim is to help you and your dog navigate these challenges with patience, empathy and science-based strategies. The goal is to gradually rebuild confidence, reduce stress and create more positive experiences for both of you. By identifying the underlying causes of your dog’s behaviour and implementing a tailored behaviour modification plan, I can help you begin opening up your world again—one step at a time. This process takes commitment, consistency and support, and I’m here to guide you every step of the way.
Depending on your and your dog’s needs, sessions can take place in the comfort of your home, outdoors, or online via Microsoft Teams. We’ll discuss the best option for you in detail before booking. Please note that I do not offer ‘quick fix’ solutions—because we’re working with deep emotions that can be overwhelming not only for your dog, but for you as well.
